The unit’s primary surgical procedures include coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve repair/replacements, heart transplants, lung transplants, heart/lung transplants, aortic/thoracic aneurysm repairs, and complicated esophageal and thoracic surgeries. CTICU nurses are educated to successfully manage and care for patients with advanced hemodynamic monitoring and supportive devices such as pulmonary artery catheters, temporary and permanent pacemakers, continuous renal replacement therapy, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and ventricular assist devices, including those used for destination therapy and bridge-to-transplant patients. Educational Support

Education is primary focus for the staff of the Heart Center. A dedicated Heart Center Education Nurse Specialist, in conjunction with unit-based staff, provides ongoing learning opportunities for all team members. Staff are encouraged to participate in a variety of multidisciplinary research studies conducted within the Heart Center. All members of the Heart Center nursing staff are ACLS-certified.

UNC offers a variety of ongoing support to all nursing staff:

  • The Critical Care Odyssey Program for new grads, and for RNs who have no previous ICU experience
  • The Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) program provides continuing educational opportunities for new grads and other RNs as determined on an individual basis
  • One-to-one preceptorships for all newly hired nurses

Continuing education is offered through UNC, with tuition reimbursement for furthering your degree in education workshops outside of the facility.
