Surgical Services Opportunities

Welcome to University of North Carolina Hospitals Surgical Services Division!

This area includes perioperative, procedural and hospital support departments. We provide a comprehensive approach to our patients and their families throughout their stay with us.

The perioperative units are found in three sites. The main site is located in N.C. Memorial Hospital and includes 24 operating rooms as well as both Pre- and Post-operative areas. The site that services the N.C. Women's and Children's hospitals is located in the N.C. Children's Hospital and includes 8 operating rooms and Pre- and Post-operative areas. The third perioperative site is located in the Ambulatory Care Center and is comprised of 4 operating rooms and Pre- and Post-operative areas.

The procedural units for Surgical Services include the Adult GI Endoscopy and both the motility units located in Memorial Hospital and the Meadowmont Center, and Pediatric GI and Pulmonary Endoscopy located in the Children's Hospital. Additionally, the Cystoscopy and Urophysiology units are located in the Urology Clinic in N.C. Memorial Hospital and the GYN clinic in the N.C. Women's Hospital.
Other Perioperative Support departments include Pre-Care, a preoperative patient assessment unit; Perfusion, which encompasses cardioperfusion and cell-saver capabilities; the Central Processing Department that is responsible for instrument and supply maintenance; Anesthesia Support; and our Business Office.

We are proud to be on the cutting edge of technology for a number of surgical procedures, including the use of the Da Vinci Robot. Our specialty services include cochlear implants, abdominal transplants, bariatric procedures and pediatric open-heart surgeries. There are over 20,000 cases done in our surgical ORs and 10,000 cases done in the procedural suites. Our outstanding team members provide care to the patients, many of whom are critically ill, with skill, efficiency, and compassion.

We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated people to join our division, which consists of the areas below:

PreCare
PreCare functions to provide high quality comprehensive care and services for patients that will undergo surgery or anesthesia dependent procedures. The department consists of thirteen exam rooms designed for patient evaluation, teaching, lab tests and EKG. The facility also includes CXR capabilities. The staff is highly committed to caring for patients ranging in age from newborn to geriatric. The PreCare staff works as a team to facilitate appropriate and effective care for patients and families enhancing the flow of patients to the Operating Room and procedural areas.

  • Staffed by RNs from 7:30 am till 6:00 pm.

Procedural Care Suites
PCS includes two areas adjacent to the Main OR. One area is designed to provide pre-procedure care and phase II recovery prior to discharge. The second area is the Short Stay Unit for extended recovery overnight care.
PCS in The Women’s and Children’s Hospital is separated into 6 pods for Women and 6 pods for children, having a play room incorporated into the area geared to kids..

  • 6:00 am to 11:00 pm Monday through Friday Main
  • 6:00am Monday to 11:00 am Saturday Short Stay Unit
  • 6:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Friday Women’s & Children’s

Operating Rooms: OR
UNCH OR is a fast paced 31-room suite offering a team-based scheduling structure. We are a level-1 trauma center with 6 primary specialty teams. These teams are: Cardiothoracic/Transplant/Vascular, Orthopedics, General/Urology, Neuro/Ophthalmology, Plastics/Burns/OHN, OMF, and Pediatrics/ GYN. UNC Hospital is a teaching facility with multiple levels of students and residents in every specialty group and department within the hospital. We are set in the middle of the beautiful University of NC campus, allowing access to many educational classes and other offerings. Every OR staff member is actively involved in a department-level team focusing on one of six areas such as Technology, Quality, or Retention. Weekly team meetings, newsletters, and frequent e-mails and surveys keep staff and management informed on changes occurring within the department as well as hospital and industry-wide.

The ORs are located on both the 2nd and the 4th floor.

  • 24 hours 7 days a week

 

Post Anesthesia Care Unit: PACU
The post – anesthesia care unit is the surgical recovery area for adult and pediatric patients located adjacent to the operating rooms both in the Main Hospital and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. RN’s staff the PACU and our nurses manage critical and special care patients as well as non-acute patients. This diversity of patient acuity demands highly skilled, experienced nurses with a broad knowledge of surgical interventions and anesthesia techniques, creating a dynamic place to work.

  • 24 hours a day 7 days a week in the Main Hospital
  • 8:00 am – 9:30 pm 5 days a week in Women & Children’s

Urophysiology
The Urophysiology Lab offers full service diagnostic evaluation and treatment of urinary incontinence, dysfunctional voiding, impotence, and management of neurogenic bladder to urology and urogynecology patients. Specific procedures performed include video urodynamics, non-fluoroscopic urodynamics, cystoscopic exams biofeedback for incontinence and intravesicular bladder instillations.

  • Staffed by RNs Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

 

Cysto Suites
The Cysto Suite provides a specialized area where both inpatients and outpatients may have their urological endoscopic procedures performed with state of the art equipment. Patients range in age from pediatrics to geriatrics. Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures performed by trained urology attendings and urology surgery residents.

  • Staffed by RNs and a Surgical Technologist
  • Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

GI Services
The GI Services includes Adult and Pediatric procedure units and Motility procedure unit. The GI Procedures Unit provides two specialized areas ( Memorial and Meadowmont) where both inpatients and outpatients may have their endosocpy procedures performed with state-of-the-art endoscopy equipment. Patients range in age from newborns to geriatrics. The Motility unit provides diagnostic testing associated with physiology of the GI tract.

  • An RN staff, provides a nurse/ patient ratio of 1:1 during procedures.
  • Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 6:00 pm
    (The adult GI staff provides on-call for weekend biliary cases.)

Ambulatory Surgery Center at the Ambulatory Care Center
The ambulatory surgery programs are housed in a separate facility, located in the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC), includes four OR’s as well as preoperative and post anesthesia care areas (phase I and II recovery), and it’s own instrument reprocessing area. Staffed by RNs, Surgical Technologists, Central Sterile Technicians, OR Assistants, Nursing Aides and Medical Support Assistants that enjoy working in a team-based environment. Our department partners with the Main Surgical Service’s educators to provide the same educational opportunities as the main O.R. and involve staff in weekly in-services.

The department is scheduled for a major renovation in 2009-2010 that will allow expansion to 8 operating rooms, an expanded pre-op, pacu and a 12 bed overnight stay unit. The original department will undergo an extensive renovation allowing for high definition minimally invasive technology to be integrated to the new operating rooms and computer facilitated ordering for central distribution supplies.

The staff enjoys the best of all worlds working as a team, in a wide diversity of areas, surgical specialty services, all with a fast pace. This is an excellent unit in which to utilize a broad knowledge base and many varied skills. Because this unit is closed on weekends and holidays, you will also have ample opportunity to enjoy the North Carolina Mountains and beaches, which are in close proximity.

  • The pre-op and pacu staff the unit from 6:30 am – 6:30 pm Monday through Friday. The operating rooms are on 9 hour blocks and the staff work 10hour shifts from 0700 to 17:30. The Short Stay Unit will be open from Monday at 9 a m. to Saturday noon.

Central Processing Department
The Central Processing Department is instrumental in providing high quality 24-hour service to all critical care areas of the hospitals. Team members primarily work with decontamination, assembly and sterilization of instrumentation as well as the compilation of supplies necessary to perform surgical cases. Staffed by a very dedicated team of Sterile Technologists, the department offers mostly 8-hour shifts that may be staggered throughout all hours of operation for improved efficiency. Weekend rotations may be required. Use of the Censitrac instrument tracking system is required. The CPD team conducts staff meetings every Wednesday morning for education, committee development, and communication.

  • Operation: 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
